New user Posts: 1 | I'm larry, Mosquito #1120. Youtube.com/LarryCanFly I want to learn more about helicopters from Kathy, Stu, and everyone on this forum. And I hope to somehow contribute too. To start, I've bought every issue of Experimental Helo ever published, and I'm happy to share anything/everything I learn flying and working on my Mosquito. OK, something Technical->Mosquito: .... The temp of the lower part of the primary reduction / sprag clutch has ranged from 150F to 175F after a 10+ minute hover. Edited by larry 2009-09-02 5:57 PM

Larry, I don't know a lot about this machine, but didn't see other answers, so I'll offer that those temps sound very reasonable for a reduction box.

Member Posts: 12 | The temp is good , the lube won't break down till 250 degF ,The temps are comprable to a certifted ship and a hover is the most work it will do.But if you want to cool the parts use a blast tube from the fan on the engine .-the TH 55 hughes had two 1/2 in dieameter tubes to cool the mags off the main cooling shroud, Just a thought.

Member Posts: 38 ![]() | Don: I've always heard it was good to get the oil/lube temp up around 200ยบ F to get the water moisture out of the oil to help avoid some acid??? What is your experience/knowledge?

Member Posts: 12 | Need to sustain the temps for a few minutes and let the moisture vent,If the seals are good there should be no problem with water entry. But a hot gearbox is a sign of begining failure so use a teletemp strip like the R-22 or use a light coat or stripe of zink cromate paint as it will turn brown when over temped (used by Bell and Sikorsky Helicopters)

Member Posts: 38 ![]() | Don: You've done it again. I've been associated with aviation since 1954 and have never heard of the use of zinc chromate paint as a temp sensor. I had an idea that you are probably carrying around a lot of useful information. I know that Reed West has told me a lot about you and your brother's contribution to his helicopter arena. I still remember your coming to our house and talking helicopters when we started the magazine. Thanks again for that support.
